MGMA poll shows prior authorization on the rise despite pandemic

A new poll recently conducted by the Medical Group Management Association (MGMA) showed that 81% of medical group practices reported that prior authorization requirements have increased since 2020. Only 2% of respondents stated that requirements have decreased.

Association leaders said in addition to the sharp rise in prior authorization demands, practices are reporting increased denials, delayed approvals for care, and "constantly changing rules."

The MGMA advocates for health plans to reduce the magnitude of prior authorization demands on medical practices, implement standardized electronic processes, and increase the transparency of authorization rules.
