The American College of Radiology (ACR) has received a grant from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation to develop a clinical quality measure for improving the completion rate of evidence-based follow-up recommendations made for incidental radiology findings.

The ACR's Closing the Loop project will initially assess the use of a system for ensuring that recommended follow-up takes place. The goal is to increase the number of patients receiving recommended imaging follow-up and subsequently benefitting from earlier cancer detection through systematic tracking and care coordination, the ACR said.

ACR Metrics Committee Chair Dr. David Seidenwurm has been tapped to serve as principal investigator for the project.

The grant was provided under the Moore Foundation's Diagnostic Excellence initiative, which aims to reduce harm from erroneous or delayed diagnoses. It also seeks to improve health outcomes and save lives by improving performance, lowering costs, and decreasing redundancy in the diagnostic process, according to the ACR.
