What's not to like about interventional radiology? It's one of the newest medical specialties, and interventional radiologists in the U.S. pulled down higher salaries in 2018 compared with their colleagues in diagnostic radiology, according to the latest data from AuntMinnie.com's SalaryScan survey of medical imaging compensation.
With an average annual salary of $411,345, interventional radiologists had higher annual compensation than diagnostic radiologists, regardless of the latter's modality subspecialization, according to the SalaryScan data. The top salary for diagnostic radiologists was for those who subspecialize in CT, with an average annual salary of $396,907, followed by MRI subspecialists at $395,328.
At the back of the pack were radiologists subspecializing in mammography, with an average annual salary of $375,514.
On a regional basis, radiologists living in the U.S. West North Central region had the highest average annual salary, at $445,945, compared with an average annual salary of $394,034 for U.S. radiologists of all experience levels, organization types, and modality specializations.
Next up were radiologists living in the U.S. West South Central region, with an average annual salary of $424,061. Bringing up the rear were radiologists in the U.S. New England region, with an average annual salary of $363,264.
Things looked a bit different for radiologic technologists (RTs). Nuclear medicine technologists were the best compensated, with an average annual salary of $80,779, while interventional technologists had an average annual salary of $79,368. At the back of the pack were mammography technologists, with an average annual salary of $69,382.
On a regional basis, the U.S. Pacific region was the most lucrative area for RTs, where they raked in an average annual salary of $86,128. Next in line were RTs from New England, with an average annual salary of $76,792.
Last in the salary line were RTs in the East South Central region of the U.S., where the average annual salary was $65,375.
