USPSTF opens review of CT lung cancer screening

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) has drafted a new research plan for CT lung cancer screening and made it available for review and public comment.

The draft research plan consists of a systematic review of studies evaluating screening for lung cancer, as well as a decision model to supplement the review. Key areas of focus include the benefits and harms of screening for lung cancer at the population level, current practices for surveilling nodules, screening frequency, and various screening strategies based on lung cancer risk.

Interested parties may review the draft research plan online. Public comment on the draft will be open from May 3 through May 30, 2018.

After assessing the comments and formulating a final research plan, the USPSTF will conduct its systematic review and draft a new recommendation statement for CT lung cancer screening. This is the first planned systematic review on the topic by the task force since the release of its previous recommendation statement in December 2013.
