Caption Health has sold its first Caption AI artificial intelligence (AI)-guided ultrasound system for heart imaging to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago.

The Caption AI system enables healthcare professionals with varying ultrasound experience to acquire and interpret echocardiograms. The system includes turn-by-turn transducer guidance and smart interpretation capabilities.

The system also shows users how close they are to acquiring a quality ultrasound image and automatically stores the image when it reaches diagnostic quality. In addition, Caption AI automatically calculates ejection fraction.

Northwestern has deployed the new systems in its emergency department, medical intensive care unit, cardio-oncology clinic, and for general use by the hospital medicine group. The hospital's chief cardiac surgeon said the deal was designed to democratize the use of echocardiograms for diagnosing and treating heart disease.

Caption AI can help to improve timely and accurate heart assessment at the point of care for professionals who have limited ultrasound experience, according to the company. Among other uses, Northwestern will leverage the new systems to train fellows in echocardiography.
