Zebra gets new patent for bone density analysis

Artificial intelligence (AI) software developer Zebra Medical Vision has received its third patent for technology that evaluates an individual's risk of osteoporosis and calculates bone mineral density values.

Zebra's latest patent was received in February 2019 and addresses the volumetric analysis of bone mineral density values extracted from CT studies. It is part of a package of technology that uses statistical and machine-learning tools to assess risk and the presence of osteoporotic fractures by classifying and correlating various bone density scores, emulating scores from dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), and analyzing bone structure.

The previous patents from Zebra were received in August and October of 2018 and focus on the ability to estimate DEXA scores from CT scans of the lumbar area of the spine. This new patent focuses on the volumetric analysis of CT images to produce and estimate DEXA scores.
