The Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR) has released new guidance on percutaneous lung ablation, published August 1 in the Journal of Vascular and Interventional Radiology.

It has also issued a quality improvement recommendation document for patient safety performance thresholds. A team led by Dr. Scott Genshaft of the University of California, Los Angeles conducted a literature review that included 63 studies and developed recommendations for the use of image-guided thermal ablation in the lung.

"SIR considers image-guided thermal ablation to be an acceptable treatment option for patients with inoperable Stage I non-small cell lung cancer [NSCLC], those with recurrent NSCLC, as well as patients with metastatic lung disease," the group wrote.
