Business models emerge for AI in medical imaging
September 10, 2018 -- Until fairly recently, most medical image analysis software was workstation-based and sold with a one-time software license. However, with the introduction of cloud-based artificial intelligence (AI) solutions, subscription and fee-per-study models are becoming more prevalent, writes Simon Harris from Signify Research.  Discuss
Deep learning can accurately stage liver fibrosis on CT
September 7, 2018 -- Deep-learning software can accurately stage liver fibrosis on contrast-enhanced CT studies, according to an article published online September 4 in Radiology. In a new study from South Korea, the software outperformed four radiologists as well as two serum fibrosis markers calculated from laboratory tests.  Discuss
JAMA: 7 forces will drive adoption of AI in healthcare
August 31, 2018 -- The rapid uptake of artificial intelligence (AI) and deep learning in healthcare is being driven by seven factors, including an increasingly crucial role for digital imaging in medicine, according to one of two Viewpoint articles published online August 30 in the Journal of the American Medical Association.  Discuss
Handheld ultrasound + CADx helps triage breast masses
August 31, 2018 -- Researchers successfully used a combination of handheld ultrasound and computer-aided diagnosis (CADx) software to triage women in Mexico who had palpable breast masses. They believe the combination is good news for women who may not have access to screening mammography, according to an article published online August 29 in the Journal of Global Oncology.  Discuss
AI spots lung nodules on CT, with low false-positive rate
August 30, 2018 -- A group from Alabama has developed a deep-learning artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm capable of detecting lung nodules on CT scans while maintaining a low false-positive rate, according to an article published online August 22 in the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association.  Discuss
RSNA launches AI challenge to detect pneumonia on x-rays
August 28, 2018 -- The RSNA has launched its second annual machine-learning challenge: The RSNA Pneumonia Detection Challenge invites teams to develop artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms to identify and localize pneumonia in chest x-rays, with top submissions to be recognized at the RSNA 2018 meeting.  Discuss
Chest CT CAD software speeds up reporting time
August 27, 2018 -- Chest CT computer-aided detection (CAD) software integrated into a radiology report dictation application reduced radiologist reading times by up to 44% over conventional manual interpretations, according to research published online in Academic Radiology.  Discuss
3 ways AI could be integrated into radiology workflow
August 24, 2018 -- As radiology artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms move toward clinical use, there are three possible models for how AI will best fit into the specialty's workflow, according to a talk on Thursday at the U.S. National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering's Artificial Intelligence in Medical Imaging workshop.  Discuss
Facebook, NYU feel need for MRI speed with AI
August 24, 2018 -- Can less really be more in MRI? Facebook and New York University (NYU) intend to find out with the launch of fastMRI, a collaborative project that aims -- with the help of artificial intelligence (AI) -- to make MRI scans up to 10 times faster by reconstructing diagnostic-quality images using much less raw data.  Discuss
Cinematic rendering bolsters AI for depth estimation on endoscopy
August 21, 2018 -- The photorealistic quality of cinematically rendered CT scans may reduce the amount of imaging data needed to train artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms for medical endoscopy applications, according to an August 16 accepted manuscript in Physics in Medicine and Biology.  Discuss
