January 18, 2018 -- In a bid to advance its goal of providing evidence-based clinical intelligence at the point of care, healthcare information systems company Change Healthcare has purchased clinical decision-support (CDS) software firm National Decision Support Company (NDSC).

For Change, the deal accelerates its product road map and increases the value it can provide to healthcare stakeholders, said President and CEO Neil de Crescenzo in a statement. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

NDSC's flagship product is CareSelect Imaging, which is an imaging CDS software application provided via an exclusive digital distribution license with the American College of Radiology (ACR). CareSelect Imaging includes the ACR Select software -- based on the ACR's Appropriateness Criteria -- as well as sets of appropriate use criteria (AUC) from other organizations such as the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging, the American College of Cardiology, the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, and the Society for Pediatric Radiology.

The company also offers CareSelect Choosing Wisely, which delivers guidelines developed by medical societies as part of the American Board of Internal Medicine Foundation's Choosing Wisely initiative. Another NDSC offering, CareSelect Lab, is a decision-support application for laboratories developed in partnership with the Mayo Clinic. Overall, NDSC has a customer base of more than 500 provider organizations, Change said.

The acquisition follows a partnership announced in February 2017 in which Change utilized the NDSC platform as part of its InterQual CDS program. Change said that NDSC CEO Michael Mardini will stay on to lead the NDSC team, which will continue to be based in its current office in Madison, WI. In addition, the acquisition accelerates Change's expansion of its Madison operation through the planned addition of other company operations there, according to the vendor.
