European groups partner on radiation issue

The European Coordination Committee of the Radiological, Electromedical, and Healthcare IT Industry (COCIR) and the European Federation of Organisations for Medical Physics (EFOMP) are collaborating on the issue of ionizing radiation.

The two organizations have signed a memorandum to represent members of the medical imaging and radiotherapy field on radiation protection and dose reduction, as well as to promote each other's educational and scientific activities.

The partnership will focus on the best use of new ionizing radiation equipment and technology to benefit both patients and users, and it will also recognize the role of medical physicists in the quality, safety, and cost-effectiveness of healthcare services, according to EFOMP President John Damilakis.

Joost Leeflang, COCIR president, added that medical imaging and radiation therapy both play key roles in the entire care cycle of patients. Working with EFOMP also is advantageous in training medical physicists and increasing the awareness of public authorities on the need to improve availability and access to even more patients.
