FGI adds metal detection to MRI building codes

The Facilities Guidelines Institute (FGI), publisher of Guidelines for Design and Construction of Health Care Facilities, has released its updated list of U.S. states that have adopted the most recent edition of the building code as their state license standards.

The new edition identifies best practice requirements for the architecture and physical construction of healthcare providers' facilities, and it includes requirements to enhance safety in the MRI environment, according to FGI.

One new MRI safety requirement is for facilities to provide ferromagnetic detection systems, which are designed to identify potentially magnetic materials before they are brought into MRI scanner rooms, where they may become deadly magnet-drawn projectiles.
