CMS releases outpatient quality data

The U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has released quality of care data for hospitals participating in the Hospital Outpatient Quality Data Reporting Program.

The data include four imaging efficiency measures, which have been calculated for hospital outpatient departments using 2008 claims data billed under the Outpatient Prospective Payment System (OPPS):

  1. MRI lumbar spine for low back pain
  2. Mammography follow-up rates
  3. Abdominal CT, use of contrast material
  4. Thorax CT, use of contrast material

CMS has created a website called Hospital Compare in collaboration with the Hospital Quality Alliance to make this data on hospital performance and quality of care available to patients, families, and providers.
