The director of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH) announced this week that he is stepping down.
Dr. Daniel Schultz had led the unit since 2004, and was responsible for a deal in 2007 that reauthorized the use of medical device user fees to fund FDA regulatory activities. FDA assistant commissioner for policy Jeffrey Shuren has been named acting director of the CDRH during the search for a permanent replacement.
Schultz had come under fire in recent months following allegations that FDA reviewers were forced to approve medical devices "against their professional judgment," according to a story by the Associated Press.
