ACR, ARRS to join forces

The American College of Radiology (ACR) and the American Roentgen Ray Society (ARRS) have reached an agreement in principle for a strategic integration.

Under the deal approved by their respective governing boards, the educational missions of the two organizations will be integrated. ARRS will head up the development and delivery of scientific and educational programs for members of both organizations, while the ACR will tackle government advocacy, economics and health policy, quality and safety, and clinical research, according to ACR of Reston, VA, and ARRS of Leesburg, VA.

The two organizations had worked together for years and announced in May 2008 that they were exploring collaborative efforts, including a possible merger. With this affiliation, however, the guiding principle was to build upon the complementary strengths of both organizations while adding value to the membership, according to ARRS President Dr. John Crowe.

Both governing boards are slated to continue their respective roles and responsibilities, with cross representation on each board. In addition, members of both organizations will continue to have access to their current offerings, according to the ACR and ARRS.

The groups believe the integration will allow them to expand and enhance their respective member services and devote greater resources to new programs. Once the details are finalized, the proposal will be presented to the ARRS membership in April for consideration, according to the organizations.

If approved, the new framework is scheduled to take effect on July 1.
