Microsoft and Epic Systems are expanding their strategic collaboration by combining the Azure OpenAI Service with Epic's electronic health record (EHR) software.

The companies said this expands their long-standing partnership, which includes allowing for organizations to run Epic environments on the Microsoft Azure cloud platform. They added that this latest update is focused on delivering generative artificial intelligence (AI)-powered software integrated with Epic's EHR to increase productivity, enhance patient care, and improve financial integrity of health systems globally.

Three healthcare organizations will deploy this technology to automatically draft message responses. These include the University of California, San Diego Health; University of Wisconsin Health; and Stanford Health Care.

The companies added that another tool will bring natural language queries and interactive data analysis to SlicerDicer, Epic's self-service reporting tool.
