Philips compact ultrasound unit gets FDA nod

Philips has received U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clearance for Ultrasound 5000 Compact, a new portable ultrasound scanner.

The scanner is designed to deliver the image quality of cart-based ultrasound in a more portable package, according to the company. It's designed for a wide range of clinical applications, including point of care, cardiology, general imaging, and obstetrics and gynecology.

Ultrasound 5000 Compact also includes tools for real-time collaboration and remote consultations and training, using Philips' Ultrasound Collaboration Live teleultrasound capabilities. It also includes integrated connectivity for streamlined workflows, according to the company.

Philips is highlighting the scanner at the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) annual meeting in San Francisco, October 1-4.
