Proton therapy developer Ion Beam Applications (IBA) and the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) in the Netherlands will collaborate on research into flash radiation therapy for breast cancer.

They signed a four-year deal to build advanced flash irradiation techniques and preclinical radiobiology models to accelerate the validation and adoption of IBA's ConformalFlash technology for use in preoperative treatment of early breast cancer.

ConformalFlash is a new delivery technique that combines ultrahigh-dose-rate flash radiotherapy with the Bragg peak properties of protons. Increasing the fraction dose and applying flash dose rates will deliver maximal ablative radiotherapy, IBA believes.

As part of the deal, IBA and the medical center will share resources and leverage the knowledge and infrastructure of the Particle Therapy Research Center, a research facility that functions with the UMCG Groningen Proton Therapy Center.
