A Louisville, KY, violin maker uses CT images to help him craft his award-winning instruments, according to a May 24 report posted on Spectrum News 1.

Former software engineer turned luthier George Yu examines CT scans of Amati and other virtuoso violins to "learn the patterns and shapes to craft his own unique style," Spectrum reported. The Amatis were a clan of violin makers in Cremona, Italy, between 1538 and 1740.

Yu graduated from the Violin Making School of America in Salt Lake City in 1999; his instruments have won awards and sell for $25,000, according to Spectrum News 1.
