Varian Medical Systems has announced three new leadership changes effective October 5, including the promotion of Chris Toth to the newly created role of president and chief operating officer (COO).

Toth currently serves as president of Varian Oncology Systems. In his new role, he will report to CEO Dow Wilson and will oversee Varian's business operations, including its 2021 fiscal goals and strategic plans.

The company also announced that Kevin O'Reilly will replace Toth as senior vice president and president of Varian Oncology Systems. In addition, Stephanie Foster has been named senior vice president of global supply chain operations.

PET/CT scans ‘crucial’ in patients with NK/T-cell lymphoma

PET/CT has significant advantages over conventional methods for lesion detection and staging in patients with natural killer/T-cell lymphoma.

A 50-year-old man with recently diagnosed nasal-type NK/T-cell lymphoma underwent an F-18 FDG-PET/CT scan (A–D) for initial staging. Maximum-intensity-projection image (A) shows hypermetabolic lesions in both ethmoid sinus (thin arrow), both cervical lymphatic chains (arrowhead), left upper lung (thick arrow), liver, and spleen. Transaxial images show an F-18 FDG-avid mass in both ethmoid sinus (B). The scan shows intense F-18 FDG radiotracer uptake in left upper lung and uptake in the liver and spleen (CT showed no lesions), suggesting malignancy (C–D). Finally, after the PET/CT scan was done, the patient’s staging was changed from II to IV.

FES-PET better than FDG-PET in breast cancer patients

In a head-to-head comparison, F-18 fluoroestradiol (FES)-PET/CT was better than standard FDG-PET/CT for the initial staging of estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer patients.
