The Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI) has sent a note to its members that, as of today, the organization still plans to hold its annual meeting in New Orleans in June.

The March 11 communiqué reconfirms the conference dates of June 13-16 and comes as concerns over the spread of the novel coronavirus escalate.

At the same time, SNMMI is "exploring multiple alternate scenarios that will allow us to move forward with producing a positive, enriching annual meeting experience," wrote Dr. Vasken Dilsizian, SNMMI president, in his message. "We recognize the situation remains fluid for families and organizations as healthcare officials and governments continue to work to contain this outbreak and we will continue to adjust, as needed."

He added that the organization has been closely following the "rapidly evolving COVID-19 situation" and monitoring updates and recommendations from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and World Health Organization relative to the "inevitable impact" the situation could have on the nuclear medicine and molecular imaging community.

"Public safety is of the utmost importance and SNMMI will make any and all decisions related to this health crisis with that as our guiding principle," Dilsizian wrote. "To keep you informed, the COVID-19 page on our 2020 annual meeting website will be updated frequently as new information becomes available."
