Women's imaging vendor Hologic has received U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clearance for 3DQuorum, an artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm designed to save time for radiologists reading digital breast tomosynthesis exams.

Working in tandem with Hologic's Clarity HD high-resolution imaging technology, 3DQuorum can decrease the volume of tomosynthesis images by 66% -- saving an average of one hour per eight hours of interpretation time, according to the vendor. 3DQuorum uses Hologic's Genius AI-powered analytics platform to identify clinically relevant regions of interest and preserve important features in order to reconstruct what the firm calls SmartSlices.

These 6-mm SmartSlices decrease the number of images radiologists need to review without compromising image quality, sensitivity, or accuracy, according to Hologic. 3DQuorum is available as part of the company's Clarity HD Plus technology package, which can be purchased for existing and future Hologic 3D mammography systems, the vendor said.
