AuntMinnie.com's SalaryScan survey finds interventional radiologists on top

TUCSON, AZ (PRWEB) - Interventional radiologists received the highest salaries among all types of diagnostic and interventional radiologists in 2018, according to a new SalaryScan survey of compensation in medical imaging published by radiology portal AuntMinnie.com.

Interventional radiologists in the U.S. reported an average annual base salary of $411,345, higher than diagnostic radiologists who subspecialized in areas such as CT, MRI, ultrasound, mammography, or nuclear medicine.

The achievement reflects the growing profile of interventional radiology, not only as a treatment alternative to open surgery but also as a viable career path for physicians. Interventional radiology was named a distinct medical specialty in 2012, and the first class of residents with dual certification in diagnostic radiology (DR) and interventional radiology (IR) began training in 2016.

SalaryScan includes information on salaries and benefits for radiology professionals, based responses from AuntMinnie.com members who responded to a survey conducted from January to February 2019. Data are available for all AuntMinnie.com members to access and compare their compensation packages to other professionals with similar experience and backgrounds.

On a regional level, the SalaryScan data found that the highest salaries for radiologists were in the U.S. West North Central area, which encompasses the states of North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Minnesota, Iowa, and Missouri. At the bottom of the pay scale were radiologists in the U.S. New England region, including the states of Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut.

The situation was different for radiologic technologists, who operate the equipment used in medical imaging procedures. The SalaryScan data indicate that technologists received the highest compensation in the U.S. Pacific region (Alaska, Washington, Oregon, California, and Hawaii), while at the other end of the scale were technologists in the U.S. East South Central area (Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, and Alabama).
