RIS/PACS vendor Novarad said that its OpenSight augmented reality (AR) software was used with Microsoft's HoloLens virtual reality headgear to guide its first surgery, an automated percutaneous lumbar discectomy.

The OpenSight app renders patient imaging studies in 3D and presents them in an interactive manner overlaid directly onto the patient's body as a dynamic hologram that can be viewed with HoloLens. Neuroradiologist and Novarad CEO Dr. Wendell Gibby performed the operation under fluoroscopic guidance, according to the company.
