ACR names 1st Choosing Wisely Champion

The American College of Radiology (ACR) has selected Dr. Jeffrey Kanne of the University of Wisconsin (UW) School of Medicine and Public Health as its first "champion" in the American Board of Internal Medicine Foundation Choosing Wisely Champions program.

The honor recognizes radiologists who exemplify the ACR's Choosing Wisely mission to reduce unwarranted imaging through communication with patients and families, education of referring colleagues, and implementation of appropriateness criteria and dose reduction efforts in their clinical practice, according to the college.

In addition to helping create multiple ACR Appropriateness Criteria, Kanne has promoted the use of appropriateness criteria across the UW enterprise via clinical decision-support (CDS) software, according to the ACR. Ambulatory care providers at UW are currently using CDS software, and the institution plans to expand the initiative to include emergency department and inpatient units, the ACR said.

Furthermore, the ACR credited Kanne's efforts to reach out to specialists from other departments for reducing routine ordering of daily chest radiographs for patients in the institution's adult intensive care unit, and also for reducing routine preoperative chest radiographs ordered for asymptomatic, low-risk patients. Kanne also offers educational sessions to residents, medical students, and nursing support staff throughout the UW health system to encourage best practices, according to the college.
