New nonprofit group launches breast density website

A new nonprofit organization called DenseBreast-info.org has launched a website that provides education and information about breast density.

The group's website is a collaboration between Executive Director JoAnn Pushkin, who also co-founded the Density Education National Survivors' Effort (DENSE); Dr. Wendie Berg, PhD, of the University of Pittsburgh; and Cindy Henke-Sarmento, a mammography technologist who led the initiative to introduce breast-density legislation in Colorado.

The site features separate sections for women and healthcare providers, an explanation of screening technologies, a patient risk checklist, links to breast cancer risk models, and an interactive map that lists breast density notification legislation by state.

"We are hoping that through this website, women will understand that if they have dense breasts, additional screening beyond a mammogram may be recommended," Berg said in a statement released by DenseBreast-info.org. "The website is meant to provide women and their care providers with the tools they need to choose the most appropriate screening, based on a woman's breast density and other risk factors."
