Siemens nets 1st U.S. Symbia Intevo xSPECT installation

Siemens Healthcare has completed the first U.S. installation of its Symbia Intevo xSPECT system at a hospital in Minnesota.

Siemens installed the system at University of Minnesota Medical Center-Fairview Health Services in Minneapolis. The xSPECT system brings together SPECT and CT during image reconstruction, combining SPECT's sensitivity with CT's specificity and integrating data from the two modalities to generate high-resolution and quantitative images, according to the company.

The system can better align SPECT and CT to differentiate tissue boundaries in bone imaging, Siemens said. With Siemens' xSPECT Bone tool, physicians can potentially provide additional support for detecting and distinguishing between cancerous lesions and degenerative disorders.

Another application, xSPECT Quant, provides precise alignment of SPECT and CT to give physicians volumetric information from the CT scan. This allows quantitative assessment, with a numerical indication of a tumor's level of metabolic activity.
