CoquĂ­ to build medical isotope production facility

Florida-based CoquĂ­ RadioPharmaceuticals plans to build and operate a dedicated medical isotope production facility in Alachua.

The firm said it has almost completed an environmental impact study for the facility. It plans to submit a construction permit application to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission in 2015.

The company has hired Invap of Argentina to design and construct the proposed facility, which will use low-enriched uranium to produce isotopes such as molybdenum-99, the precursor to technetium-99m, according to CoquĂ­.
