Getting the angles right in mobile devices

Monday, December 2 | 3:30 p.m.-3:40 p.m. | SSE13-04 | Room S402AB
In this session, representatives from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will shed light on the issue of viewing angles when looking at images on mobile devices.

One of the challenging aspects of utilizing mobile devices for viewing images is ensuring consistent performance in a variety of ambient environments. To test how viewing direction affects the spatial resolution of mobile devices, the FDA team evaluated a liquid crystal display (LCD) phone, two LCD tablets, and two displays based on organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs).

After each screen displayed a PenTile subpixel arrangement, the researchers used an imaging photometer camera to capture the screen at various orientations with 1° steps from -8° to +8° relative to the perpendicular viewing direction. Analysis revealed that the devices had subtle viewing dependencies that corresponded to different display technologies.

What type of displays were least affected by angle? Take in the talk by presenter Aldo Badano, PhD, to get all the details.
