EndoSonics inks deal to develop catheters

EndoSonics of Rancho Cordova, CA, and North American Scientific of Chatsworth, CA, have signed an agreement aimed at developing a new type of cardiovascular catheter to be used in brachytherapy procedures. The catheter will use ultrasound guidance to make the delivery of radiation to treatment sites more accurate.

The catheter will be designed to treat coronary arteries that have a high degree of restenosis following successful intervention for cardiovascular disease. EndoSonics will contribute its intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) technology, while North American Scientific will manufacture tungsten-188 radiation sourcewire, as well as the system's shielded base unit and delivery system.

Also cooperating on the project is the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, where researchers will help conduct clinical trials of the device.
