The report was produced by Health Management Associates, a consulting firm commissioned by the American Society of Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) to conduct an independent assessment of the radiation oncologist workforce.
"The most likely scenario supports a relative projected balance between supply and demand until 2030 without significant oversupply or undersupply of ROs at this time," wrote the ASTRO Workforce Task Force, in an accompanying review commentary.
Over the past decade, concerns have arisen in radiation oncology regarding potential workforce supply and demand imbalance. The American Society for Radiation Oncology commissioned an independent analysis in 2022, looking at supply and demand in the U.S. radiation oncology workforce and projecting future trends for 2025 and 2030.
The HMA report models several potential scenarios for the future radiation oncologist and is titled "Projected Supply and Demand for Radiation Oncologists in the U.S. in 2025 and 2030."
