Skia introduces AR-based surgery guide

By AuntMinnie.com staff writers

May 10, 2022 -- Medical extended reality software developer Skia has introduced an augmented reality (AR)-based digital surgery guide that superimposes medical images onto patients.

The company's Skia_Breast product consists of a tablet with a case and a 3D sensor. Using the product, surgeons can check the location or shape of tissue by examining images that are projected onto the patient's skin.

Unlike most AR technologies that are applied in surgery, Skia_Breast doesn't require multiple markers to be implanted into bone tissue, like the spine.

Currently, the surgery guide is in clinical trials at Ewha Womans University Medical Center in Seoul, South Korea.
