July 27, 2006 -- A hospital in Mississippi that saw the loss of more than 10,000 patient records due to Hurricane Katrina has rebuilt its database thanks to a donation from a foundation run by the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) of Chicago.

Waveland Medical Center in Waveland, MS, rebuilt its medical records with a donation from the Katrina Phoenix project, an initiative created by the HIMSS Foundation. The foundation provides donated electronic health record (EHR) software to healthcare facilities harmed by Hurricane Katrina.

Through donations to the Katrina Phoenix project, the society provided a grant to Waveland for an EHR application through the HIMSS Foundation and implemented it using volunteers with the project. The hospital used the SoapWare EHR system as part of the records-restoration project.

Companies participating in the Katrina Phoenix project are A4 Health Systems, Casenotes, Companion Technologies, Greenway Medical Technologies, HealthLanguage, InteGreat, JMJ Technologies, Lakes Health Systems, MD Synergy, MedcomSoft, MedicAlert Foundation, MediNotes, Medpracticeflow, MedQuist, Misys Healthcare Systems, Optimal Practice Solutions, OptimizeIT, Practice Partner, RedMedic, SoapWare, SRIT, TeleVital, and TrueNorth, according to the HIMSS Foundation.
