April 26, 2005 -- The board of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) of Chicago has approved the society's participation in the electronic health record (EHR) interoperability collaboration process, which addresses the creation and management of standardized medical summaries and other clinical templates.

The leadership of HIMSS, Health Level Seven (HL7), Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE), and the HIMSS EHR Vendors Association (EHRVA) have begun work on this effort by establishing a set of activities that would provide an HL7 implementation guide and launch a new patient care coordinated IHE domain, with interoperability of medical summary documents set for January 2006.

Representatives from professional societies including the American College of Physicians, American Academy of Pediatrics, Massachusetts Medical Society, American Medical Association, and the Alliance for Nursing Informatics, as well as physicians, nurses, pharmacists, standards developers, and information technology and healthcare informatics experts, are participating in the process, HIMSS said.
