USPSTF proposes to reaffirm stance on AAA screening

June 18, 2019 -- The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) is seeking comment on a draft recommendation statement on screening for abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), in which the group proposes to maintain its existing guidance that older men receive screening exams.

The draft reiterates the task force's 2014 recommendations:

Men ages 65 to 74 who have ever smoked should undergo a one-time ultrasound screening for the condition (B grade).
Clinicians should selectively offer ultrasound screening for AAA in men ages 65 to 75 who have never smoked rather than routinely screening all men in this group (C grade).
Women who have never smoked and have no family history of AAA should not undergo routine screening (D grade).
Evidence is insufficient to evaluate the benefits and harms of ultrasound screening for AAA in women ages 65 to 75 who have ever smoked or have a family history (I grade).

USPSTF is taking comment on the draft recommendation from June 18 to July 15, 2019.
