June 11, 2019 -- French therapeutic ultrasound developer EDAP said that the American Medical Association has accepted its request for a new category 1 current procedural terminology (CPT) code to provide reimbursement for ablation of prostate cancer using high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU).

The code covers transrectal ablation of malignant prostate tissue and includes ultrasound guidance. It will be added in the next CPT codebook and will take effect on January 1, 2021, according to EDAP. The application was also supported by the American Urological Association and the American Association of Clinical Urologists, EDAP said.
