May 22, 2019 -- Medical device firm ControlRad has received U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 510(k) clearance for its Trace radiation dose-reduction technology for fluoroscopy.

Trace, which can be integrated on existing mobile C-arms, utilizes a proprietary semitransparent filter, tablet, and enhanced image-processing techniques to lower radiation dose for any fluoroscopic imaging procedure, according to the vendor.

After clinicians draw a region of interest on the tablet, Trace then optimizes image quality in real-time to reduce unnecessary radiation in the periphery, ControlRad said. The company claims that the technology can reduce unnecessary radiation by up to 89%. Trace is now available commercially.
