May 8, 2020 -- Healthcare employment declined by 1.4 million jobs in April, according to a report released May 8 by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

These losses were led by the following:

  • Physician offices: 243,000
  • Dentists: 503,000
  • Other healthcare practitioners' offices: 205,000

These changes "reflect the effects of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and efforts to contain it," the bureau wrote.

Total employment fell by 20.5 million, raising the unemployment rate to 14.7%, according to the report.
