The participants in the new value-based bundled payment model include a total of 1,547 Medicare providers and suppliers -- 832 acute care hospitals and 715 physician group practices -- located in 49 states plus Washington, DC, and Puerto Rico, CMS said.
BPCI Advanced, which runs from October 1, 2018, through December 31, 2023, builds on the BPCI initiative that ended on September 30, according to CMS. The program adds bundled payments for additional clinical episodes beyond those included in BPCI, including, for the first time, outpatient episodes, CMS said.
In addition, BPCI Advanced provides participants with preliminary target prices before the start of each model year to allow for more effective planning, CMS said. Notably, BPCI Advanced also qualifies as an Advanced Alternative Payment Model under the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA), exempting participating providers from the reporting requirements associated with the Merit-Based Incentive Payment System (MIPS).
CMS said that BPCI Advanced will initially include 32 bundled clinical episodes: 29 inpatient and three outpatient episodes. More information on the new bundled payment model is available on the CMS website.
