February 3, 2021 -- Materialise's 3D printing planning and surgical tools, which are based on CT scans, supported the world's first simultaneous double hand and face transplant.

Materialise's tools were used to develop a surgical plan for a 22-year-old man who was left with severe injuries to his arms and face following a car accident. Materialise and a team at NYU Langone Health in Manhattan prepared for the surgery for 14 months.

Surgeons and clinical engineers virtually planned the procedure using Materialise's 3D tools. The software developer also 3D printed the personalized surgical guides, anatomical models, and tools for use during the transplant surgery.
