October 12, 2021 -- The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai has unveiled a new department dedicated to spurring on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology in healthcare.

The medical school's Department of Artificial Intelligence and Human Health plans to perform research, apply that knowledge to treatment in hospitals and clinical-based settings, and provide personalized patient care, according to Mount Sinai.

"The overarching goal of the Department for AI and Human Health is to impact patients' health with AI," said department head Dr. Thomas Fuchs in a statement from Mount Sinai. "We will accomplish this by building AI systems at scale from data representing Mount Sinai's diverse patient population. These systems will work seamlessly across all hospitals and care units to support physicians, foster research, and most importantly, help patients' care and well-being."

The department intends to create what they call an "AI Fabric" that will integrate machine learning and AI-driven decision-making across the health system's eight hospitals. As part of this effort, the institution will create a hub-and-satellite model to make new tools and techniques available to all Mount Sinai physicians. In addition, infrastructure for high-performance computing and data access will be built in order to enhance the health system's diagnostic and treatment capabilities, Mount Sinai said.

Mount Sinai's new department will be located on four floors in a redesigned and renovated space at 3 East 101st Street in New York City. Areas for computational work, as well as virtual and augmented reality, will be available.
