AAPM answers questions on fetal, gonadal shielding

By AuntMinnie.com staff writers

December 3, 2019 -- The American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) on December 1 released a follow-up statement answering questions regarding its stance on the use of patient gonadal and fetal shielding in diagnostic imaging exams.

In April 2019, the AAPM released a position statement outlining reasons for limiting the routine use of fetal and gonadal shielding in medical imaging. After discussions with representatives from various stakeholders, the AAPM has now posted a document addressing the most common concerns presented by healthcare professionals, adults patients, and parents and caregivers of pediatric patients.

The new document can help facilities that choose to limit the routine use of fetal and gonadal shielding to establish a guideline that meets the particular needs of their practice, according to the AAPM.
