Mammography

The 3Dimensions mammography system is the fastest, highest-resolution breast tomosynthesis system on the market.vii,ix* It features several enhancements, including Clarity HD high-resolution 3D imaging, which provides the industry's fastest, highest resolution 3D images to accelerate screening and analysis. The system also includes Intelligent 2D imaging technology, which works with Clarity HD technology to deliver unprecedented clarity, contrast and detail at a lower dose.x,xi* The 3Dimensions system includes the new SmartCurve breast stabilization system, which is clinically proven to deliver a more comfortable mammogram without compromising image quality, workflow or dose.i* Another feature available with the 3Dimensions system is the Quantra 2.2 breast density assessment software, which enables standardization in patient protocols, providing reproducible and consistent breast density assessment.

Breast Biopsy

The Brevera® breast biopsy system with CorLumina® imaging technology is a real-time breast biopsy and verification system that enhances workflow, improves the patient experience and streamlines the entire biopsy process from start to finish.xii

Mini C-Arm

The Fluoroscan® Insight FD Mini C-Arm Imaging System is the next generation in mini C-arm imaging that provides high-resolution and low-dose rate modes, which delivers the largest primary image size with high image resolution available, on an intuitive 24-inch HD touchscreen.xiii, xiv,xv

New Research of Note

Study of Medicare Data Concludes DBT 'Has Crossed Over from the Experimental to the Clinical Realm'

Although a recent study presented at RSNA found less than 20 percent of Medicare-eligible women received DBT exams in 2015, the first year Medicare covered the exam, the research team behind the study told AuntMinnie.com this "is still a large number considering the magnitude of effort and cost that is necessary for practices to acquire the technology." Their analysis of the data concluded "tomosynthesis has crossed over from the experimental to the clinical realm" and "radiologists really have embraced this new technology."

DBT More Cost-effective than 2D Mammography, Despite Higher Cost

A research team led by Dr. Emily Conant from the University of Pennsylvania presented findings at SABCS that concluded tomosynthesis costs less than 2D mammography when diagnosis-related costs are taken into consideration. Despite a higher cost per individual DBT study, researchers found both modalities had about the same average episode costs per woman screened for false-positive, false-negative and true-positive. Higher DBT costs for true-negative outcomes were attributed to higher reimbursement levels for DBT paid by the CMS.

DBT Experience Increases Radiologist Recall, Detection Rates

A retrospective study published in Radiology found experience with DBT can increase a radiologist's recall rate, cancer detection rate and positive predictive values for 2D mammography. Lead author Dr. Ana P. Lourenco told Radiology Business they suspected the increased recall rate for 2D mammography alone following DBT experience "could be a result of decreased radiologist confidence when interpreting digital mammograms alone."

Physicians' Experiences with Family and Friends Impacts Breast Cancer Screening Recommendations

A national survey of more than 800 physicians conducted by Johns Hopkins Medicine and published in JAMA Internal Medicine suggests physician experiences with patients, family members and friends with breast cancer can impact a physician’s mammography screening recommendations. This is especially relevant for physicians who know at least one individual with a poor breast cancer prognosis who had not been screened, as they are more likely to recommend routine screening for younger and older age groups where some nationally recognized screening guidelines disagree.

Contrast-enhanced Digital Mammography Comparable to Breast MRI

A new study presented by Mayo Clinic researchers at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium found contrast-enhanced digital mammography is comparable to breast MRI in evaluating residual breast cancer after neoadjuvant endocrine therapy or chemotherapy.
