Volumetry software affects CT lung screening recall rates
September 20, 2019 -- Using different types of volumetry software to measure nodules on CT lung cancer screening exams can drastically alter the recall rate for follow-up exams, underscoring the need to validate the software to ensure effective screening, according to an article recently published online in the European Journal of Radiology.  Discuss
ASTRO: Radiation can nix side effects of T-cell therapy
September 20, 2019 -- Patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma who received radiation 30 days or less before chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy have a lower risk of side effects from the treatment, according to a study presented this week at the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) annual meeting in Chicago.  Discuss
Can AI screen for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease?
September 20, 2019 -- An artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm was able to automatically quantify liver fat on abdominal CT images in a new study, according to research published online September 17 in Radiology. The findings may potentially enable patients who are undergoing CT scans for other indications to also be screened for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).  Discuss
ISCT: 5 clinical benefits of photon-counting CT
September 19, 2019 -- SAN DIEGO - Photon-counting CT scanners might not yet be available for everyday clinical use, but early studies have shown that the technology can offer clear benefits over conventional CT, many of which Dr. Cynthia McCollough, PhD, detailed in the opening session of the 2019 International Society for Computed Tomography (ISCT) symposium.  Discuss
Breast cancer mortality rate higher in men than women
September 19, 2019 -- Men with breast cancer have mortality rates 19% higher compared with women with the disease, according to a study published September 19 in JAMA Oncology. The results suggest that further research is needed on the biological features of male breast cancer and tailored treatment for men, the researchers noted.  Discuss
ASTRO: Radiation therapy can calm rapid heart rhythm
September 19, 2019 -- Just one high dose of radiation to the heart can significantly reduce episodes of ventricular tachycardia, an irregular rapid heart rhythm that can be deadly, according to a study presented this week at the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) meeting in Chicago.  Discuss
Shear-wave elastography tracks effects of knee surgery
September 19, 2019 -- Shear-wave elastography can help clinicians track the long-term effects of total knee arthroplasty, according to a study published online September 14 in Academic Radiology. The findings offer clinicians another option for patient follow-up after surgery, the researchers noted.  Discuss
Ultrasound could help assess bone health
September 19, 2019 -- A new ultrasound technique could help clinicians assess bone health and distinguish between tumors and healthy tissue, according to one study published in the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America and another in Physics in Medicine & Biology.  Discuss
3D VR models improve kidney-sparing surgery outcomes
September 18, 2019 -- Examining 3D virtual reality (VR) models during presurgical planning for robotic-assisted partial nephrectomy led to reductions in operating time, blood loss, and hospital length of stay compared with planning based on MRI and CT scans alone in a new study, published online September 18 in JAMA Network Open.  Discuss
Fast MRI technique benefits kids with head trauma
September 18, 2019 -- Using a "fast" MR technique instead of CT for imaging clinically stable pediatric patients with a suspected traumatic brain injury can accurately diagnose them without sedation or exposure to radiation, according to a study published September 18 in Pediatrics.  Discuss
