3D volume-rendered CT for pelvic fractures scales back imaging studies, not quality

Diagnosing acetabular fracture, particularly in the trauma setting, is an elaborate process that involves multiple, time-consuming, radiation dose-heavy imaging studies. In an effort to simplify this complex imaging paradigm, radiologists and orthopedists at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC, have proposed using 3D volume-rendered CT to assess acetabular fractures. Their protocol would reduce the number of imaging studies as well as the patient dose.

Disparate VC results suggest 2D/3D debate isn't over

Two recent studies have given new life to an old rivalry: 2D versus 3D primary reading of virtual colonoscopy data. In the first, ACRIN 6664 researchers found no significant difference in sensitivity between the two reading methods. In the second study, however, researchers at the University of Wisconsin in Madison found that primary 3D reading on a single system produced substantially better outcomes compared to 2D reading.

GE licenses fetal ultrasound technique

Multimodality vendor GE Healthcare has secured an exclusive license on a technique patented by an Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) obstetrician that can automate the acquisition of ultrasound images used by physicians to diagnose fetal heart defects.
