IBA, partners to bring proton therapy to Ala.

Proton therapy developer Ion Beam Applications (IBA) is partnering with several groups to bring advanced proton therapy cancer treatment to Alabama.

IBA is collaborating with Providence Proton, St. Vincent's Birmingham, Bruno Cancer Center, Southeastern Oncology Associates, and Dr. Susan Salter. Providence Proton and St. Vincent's will use ProteusOne, which is IBA's compact single-room proton therapy system.

The Providence and St. Vincent's Proton Center will be located on the campus of St. Vincent's Birmingham. Development costs are expected to be in excess of $50 million, and a typical center takes two years to complete. Construction is expected to begin over the next six months, and the center will open in 2019.
