Elekta disputes Varian patent infringement claims

Radiation oncology firm Elekta said it will defend itself vigorously against recent legal claims initiated by Varian Medical Systems.

Varian has filed civil lawsuits and requested on September 25 that the U.S. International Trade Commission initiate a patent infringement proceeding against Elekta, according to the Swedish firm. Elekta said the claims have no merit and that it does not foresee any material business impact as a result of these claims.

In a statement, Elekta President and CEO Tomas Puusepp said the claims are apparently part of Varian's legal strategy against a lawsuit by William Beaumont Hospital and Elekta earlier this year.

PET/CT scans ‘crucial’ in patients with NK/T-cell lymphoma

A 50-year-old man with recently diagnosed nasal-type NK/T-cell lymphoma underwent an F-18 FDG-PET/CT scan (A–D) for initial staging. Maximum-intensity-projection image (A) shows hypermetabolic lesions in both ethmoid sinus (thin arrow), both cervical lymphatic chains (arrowhead), left upper lung (thick arrow), liver, and spleen. Transaxial images show an F-18 FDG-avid mass in both ethmoid sinus (B). The scan shows intense F-18 FDG radiotracer uptake in left upper lung and uptake in the liver and spleen (CT showed no lesions), suggesting malignancy (C–D). Finally, after the PET/CT scan was done, the patient’s staging was changed from II to IV.

FES-PET better than FDG-PET in breast cancer patients

In a head-to-head comparison, F-18 fluoroestradiol (FES)-PET/CT was better than standard FDG-PET/CT for the initial staging of estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer patients.
