SIR: Ultrasound helps plantar fasciitis patients

The use of specific ultrasonic energy to penetrate, emulsify, and remove diseased tissue can help patients with chronic plantar fasciitis, according to a study presented at this week's Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR) meeting.

The image-guided ultrasonic treatment allowed physicians to remove damaged, pain-generating tissue permanently, enabling healthy tissue to grow in its place and restore normal function, according to SIR.

Dr. Rahul Razdan, from Advanced Medical Imaging in Lincoln, NE, and colleagues evaluated 100 patients who presented with chronic, refractory plantar fasciopathy. All patients previously failed to respond to medications, activity modification, and arch supports.

Two weeks after treatment, more than 90% of patients reported improvement in symptoms, and the improvements remained at six months. Subjects also reported being highly satisfied with the treatment, and there were no treatment-related complications.
