Varian revenue up, net earnings down in Q1

Varian Medical Systems reported gains in revenue for the first quarter of fiscal 2015 (end-January 2).

Revenue increased 4% to $737.9 million, compared with $711.5 million in the first quarter of fiscal 2014. Net earnings slipped to $93.3 million, compared with $98 million in the same quarter last year.

Despite the decrease in net earnings, Varian said the results were "significantly ahead of its earnings target ... with the help of favorable geographic and product mix, as well as successful cost containment initiatives" that improved gross margins.

In addition, revenue in the company's Oncology Systems segment increased 4% in the first quarter to $563 million. The Imaging Components unit had a 3% revenue gain, reaching $166 million for the quarter.
