Medical image sharing firm LifeImage of Boston has teamed up with Fujifilm Medical Systems USA of Stamford, CT, to integrate its technology into Synapse PACS.
The LifeImage technology was integrated into the Synapse user interface to enable users to collect and share exams on CD and view outside exams without having to import data to the local PACS.
The company also announced it has integrated its image sharing platform with Microsoft's HealthVault, making it possible for physicians to share imaging information directly with their patients and providing a simple way to view and review imaging exams shared with HealthVault accounts, according to LifeImage.
With a patient's permission, physicians using LifeImage services will be able to share medical image exams and associated reports directly with a HealthVault account. When an exam is shared, patients will be prompted to complete the transfer by logging into their HealthVault account to claim the exam or creating a new account, then claiming the exam. LifeImage's HIPAA-compliant platform employs a series of security checks to ensure the privacy and security of all data.
In addition, LifeImage announced it has been selected as the clearinghouse for RSNA's National Medical Image Sharing Project. The two-year image sharing project is funded by a federal contract from the National Institutes of Health/National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering. The goal of the project is to promote a standards-based workflow for populating personal health record (PHR) platforms with patients' medical image data and give patients control of their imaging reports and images. Initial connectivity is being demonstrated at the RSNA 2010 conference in Chicago, and live patient data exchange is planned for January 2011.
All image and report data from the project's five participating medical centers -- Mount Sinai Medical Center; University of California, San Francisco; University of Maryland; University of Chicago; and the Mayo Clinic -- will flow through the LifeImage network to the participating personal health record (PHR) platforms. It is expected that 300,000 patients will interact with the exchange over the course of the two-year contract.
