Sony introduces thermal printable disk drive

Sony Electronics will unveil a direct thermal printable disk drive as part of its array of new products at the RSNA 2011 meeting.

The UPB-C10 printable disk drive is a DVD burner with a built-in direct thermal label printer. The unit is designed for easy integration into any PACS workstation for fast, accurate, and reliable printing, according to the firm.

Sony is counting on the fast printing speed of UPB-C10 and its ability to eliminate the need for centralized multidisk burning solutions to help improve imaging department workflow and efficiency. UPB-C10 prints disks in about 30 seconds.

The potential for printing errors is reduced by eliminating the need for two separate products and the need to flip the disk over for each process, according to the company. Other features include the ability to perform data writing and label printing in a standard 5.25-inch bay. No drying time is required, allowing the clinician to deliver the disk to patients immediately after printing, Sony said.

UPB-C10 is equipped with label template and management software for customized designs to add marketing and branding efforts. It supports a wide range of common DVD and CD formats, is available in either white or black color configurations, and can be mounted vertically or horizontally depending on the user's needs.
